Honesty is valuable!
Japan returns 83 percent of lost phones because honesty is not just a value there it is a daily practice taught from the first day of school. Japanese children are trained through a system called Soji where they clean their own classrooms and public spaces building a deep sense of shared responsibility. A 2023 report by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that millions of items including cash and electronics are returned every year through official lost and found systems across the country.
Researchers at Harvard studying civic behavior found that cultures with early honesty education show significantly lower rates of petty crime and higher public trust scores Japan consistently ranks among the top globally in both categories. This is not about fear of punishment but about identity. Japanese children are raised to see returning what is not yours as the only natural response. One child handing back a stranger's phone is not just a kind act but an entire culture speaking through a single moment.
