Precision Policing!
Fewest murders. Fewest shootings. Fewest victims. NYC's first five months of 2026 broke three records at once.
Only 102 murders in the first five months – the fewest ever for that period and down 20.9% from 2025, the NYPD reported on June 3, 2026. Shootings and shooting victims also hit record lows; major crime fell 6.2% citywide – and 10.6% in May alone.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani, in office since January, celebrates the numbers – but the credit is contested: the decline began under his predecessor Eric Adams, and Mamdani kept Adams' police commissioner Jessica Tisch, who attributes the drop to her "precision policing" strategy.
Not every number is falling: the NYPD also reported a 74% spike in hate crimes in May, and felony assaults are up – a mixed picture behind the records.
