Massive Dam in China influences Earth's rotation!

NASA scientists calculated that China's massive Three Gorges Dam holds enough water to alter the rotation of the entire planet and subtly shift its axis. When the massive hydroelectric facility fills its colossal reservoir with nearly 40 billion cubic meters of water, it redistributes a staggering amount of mass across the Earth's surface. According to research led by Dr. Benjamin Fong Chao at NASA, this massive concentration of weight acts like a planetary brake. By lifting that much water up into a massive reservoir hundreds of feet above sea level, the dam changes the planet's moment of inertia. Just like a figure skater pulling their arms in or out to control their spin, our planet reacts to how its mass is distributed. Because the water is spread across a wider area and elevated, the Earth's rotation slows down by a fraction of a second. Specifically, NASA calculations show that the dam increases the length of a day by about 0.06 microseconds. At the same time, the shifting mass causes the Earth's physical poles to move by roughly two centimeters. While these changes are far too small for anyone to feel in daily life, they prove that human engineering projects can operate on a planetary scale. It turns out that building some of our largest civil infrastructure can measurably rewrite the fundamental rotation metrics of our world. How surprised are you to learn that human construction projects can physically alter the rotation speed of our planet?
