The Times of India reports that Indian Railways completed the 10.847-km Escape Tunnel-1 on September 11, 2026, marking the 41st tunnel breakthrough for the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail project in Uttarakhand.Project DetailsImplementing Agency: Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL).Milestone: Breakthrough of 10.847-km Escape Tunnel-1 at Dhalwala (Tehri, Uttarakhand), making it the second-longest tunnel in the project corridor.Overall Progress: 41 out of 46 total tunnels are now complete, with the remaining 5 expected within the next year.Geological Challenges: Construction faced complex Himalayan conditions, including multi-folded, sheared, and intensely crushed rock near the Main Boundary Thrust (MBT).Total Project Scope: A 125-km broad-gauge line designed to improve regional mobility and Char Dham shrine connectivity.
