In 2008, a Brazilian priest named Adelir Antônio de Carli tried to raise money for a rest stop and worship center for truckers by doing something almost impossible to imagine. He tied himself to hundreds of helium balloons and lifted off into the sky. At first, it looked like a stunt no one would ever forget. But then it turned into a tragedy. He drifted away from the coast and out over the Atlantic Ocean. Contact was lost. Search teams looked for him, but the priest had vanished into the sky and sea.
