Are you aware of Glacier Lakes?

More Than 2,000 Glacier Lakes Are Hidden Across Nepal’s Himalayan Region — And Some Pose a Serious Risk The Himalayas may look frozen and peaceful, but thousands of glacier-fed lakes are forming high among the mountains. Scientific assessments by organizations including ICIMOD and UNDP have identified more than 2,000 glacial lakes across the river basins connected to Nepal, including the Koshi, Gandaki and Karnali basins. But there is a much more worrying part… ⚠️ 41 lakes have been identified as potentially dangerous. Of these, 21 are located within Nepal. Why are scientists concerned? As the climate warms, glaciers can lose ice faster than they accumulate it. Meltwater can collect behind natural dams made of ice, rock and sediment, causing some glacial lakes to expand. And these natural dams aren't always permanent. 🌊 If a dam fails, enormous quantities of water can suddenly rush downstream in what is known as a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). Such floods can travel rapidly through narrow Himalayan valleys, destroying bridges, roads, homes, farmland and other infrastructure in their path. The danger isn't simply that a lake is large. Scientists assess factors such as lake growth, surrounding terrain, the stability of the natural dam, glacier conditions and the potential impact downstream when determining which lakes pose the greatest risk. 🌑️ Climate change is making this issue increasingly important because rising temperatures are accelerating glacier loss across the Hindu Kush Himalaya. But there is also some good news. Nepal and international organizations are working on early-warning systems, lake monitoring and risk-reduction measures to help communities prepare for possible outburst floods. πŸ”️ The Himalayas aren't just home to some of the world's highest mountains. They are also a vast natural water tower—and as the climate changes, the lakes forming around those glaciers are becoming an increasingly important issue for millions of people living downstream. A lake thousands of metres above sea level might seem far away from everyday life.
