Reports suggest that Japan has struck a deal with Iran to buy Iranian oil using the Chinese yuan! This will allow the vessels carrying the oil to pass the Strait of Hormuz without paying tolls. This is the most important development for an alternative currency to the petrodollar which underpins much of America’s prosperity and wealth. It was the Saudis many decades ago who decided that buyers had to use the American dollar to purchase Saudi oil. That started the petrodollar, which became the default currency for the oil trade. It is also a major reason why the American dollar is the reserve currency of the world. The reserve currency is the bedrock of American global financial dominance all these decades. The Gulf countries use the American dollars they earn from selling oil to invest in the American stock market. Much of the AI boom has been fuelled by Arab money. Now with AI centres having been targeted by Iranian missiles in the Gulf, and with many Gulf countries reappraising their investments in America, it is crunch time for the American dollar. And the advent of the petroyuan adds to the headache for the Americans.
