DP performance on Sonam Wangchuk!
The Delhi Police on Saturday (July 18) morning picked up Ladakhi innovator and activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was on the 21st day of an indefinite hunger strike, and forcefully took him to hospital.
The police claimed on X that this move was done according to high court orders based “on expert medical advise due to the deteriorating health condition” of Wangchuk.
Videos from the morning showed protesters trying to stop police access to Wangchuk, before being overpowered. The police used white sheets to form a cover around Wangchuk while they moved him. He has reportedly been taken to Safdarjung Hospital.
Wangchuk and three student activists from the All India Students’ Association (AISA) – Neha, Aamen and Manish – have been on an indefinite hunger strike demanding the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan and changes to India’s examination and education system.
Student protesters who were at the protest site in the morning formed a protective chain around the three AISA protesters so that they could not be picked up by the police. Videos from the protest site shared by AISA
Cockroach Janata Party spokesperson Saurav Das said on X that Abhijeet Dhipke had been surrounded by the police where he was staying, as did NCP spokesperson Anish Gawande at whose house Dhipke was staying. Dhipke said that he had been “beaten and put under detention” by the police. After that, he appears to have been allowed to go to the protest site. “Delhi Police ne aaj itni giri hui harkat kari hai (Delhi Police has stooped so low today),” he said while addressing the sloganeering crowds.
