What if a ring you wore every day turned out to be one of the most valuable things you owned? That is exactly what happened to a woman in the United Kingdom, and her incredible discovery amazed people around the world. In 1987, the woman bought a vintage-looking ring for just £10 at a charity car boot sale held at West Middlesex Hospital in London. The large stone looked like ordinary glass set in an old, tarnished ring, so she never imagined it could be anything special. She wore it for nearly 30 years while shopping, doing everyday errands, and going about her daily life. Everything changed in 2017 when she noticed the stone had a unique sparkle and decided to have it examined. A local jeweler suggested taking it to Sotheby’s, where experts sent it to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) for testing. The results were astonishing. The ring was identified as an authentic 26.29-carat, 19th-century white diamond with VVS2 clarity. Because of its old hand-cut design and worn setting, many people had mistaken it for costume jewelry over the years. Sotheby’s initially estimated the ring’s value at around $500,000, but competitive bidding pushed the final sale price to £656,750, or about $850,000. It is a remarkable reminder that sometimes extraordinary treasures can be hiding in the most unexpected places.
