EXAMPLE - to follow!
Imagine if YOU have this in YOUR COUNTRY, too!
In Trento, Italy, that is not just a joke. It is an actual tradition.
Every year during the city’s Feste Vigiliane celebrations, locals hold a satirical public event called La Tonca, a comic “trial” where the person judged to have made the year’s most ridiculous or controversial blunder is publicly roasted.
And then comes the punishment. The chosen “winner” is locked inside a metal cage, hoisted above the icy Adige River, and dunked into the water three times while the crowd cheers and laughs.
It sounds medieval because it actually is inspired by one. La Tonca reenacts an old punishment once used centuries ago, but today it is purely symbolic, theatrical, and meant as civic satire.
Think of it as a live meme about accountability. Before the dunking, there is even a mock court with a judge, prosecutor, defense lawyer, and public commentary.
Politicians are often frequent targets, especially after controversial decisions, public blunders, or city-wide frustrations.
But sometimes the choices are surprisingly funny and petty, too. This is less about punishment and more about public roasting on a city-wide scale.
A reminder that in some places, accountability comes with costumes, laughter, and an ice-cold dip in the river.
