Solar-powered aircraft came to sad end!
The historic Solar Impulse 2 aircraft came to a sad end on May 4, 2026.
The famous solar-powered plane was being tested as a self-flying drone when it ran out of battery power during a severe storm and had to land in the Gulf of Mexico.
While some early reports called the incident a crash, the plane actually completed a historic mission before it went down.
It had successfully flown for eight straight days without stopping as part of a U.S. Navy training exercise.
On its way back to Mississippi, the plane hit a massive storm with violent winds. To fight the heavy winds and stay in the air, the plane's electric motors had to work overtime.
This used up energy much faster than the solar panels could recharge from the sun. The self-flying system kept control of the plane until the very end, guiding it down for a safe landing on the water.
However, because the plane was built from ultra-lightweight materials, it eventually sank to the bottom of the Gulf.
Losing the plane means it can no longer be sent to a museum in Switzerland as originally planned. Even though the physical aircraft is gone, its creators say its legacy is completely secure.
In 2016, Solar Impulse 2 made history by becoming the first solar plane to fly all the way around the world without using a single drop of fuel. It proved to the world that clean energy and forever-flight are truly possible
