Meeting people!
“I went to the bank with my father one day while he needed to transfer some money.
As we sat waiting, I casually asked,
‘Dad, why don’t we activate internet banking for you?’
He looked at me and smiled.
‘Why would I do that?’ he asked.
I quickly replied,
‘Because then you won’t have to come all the way to the bank for simple things like transfers. You could shop online too. Groceries, medicines, almost everything can be delivered right to your door. Life would become so much easier.’
I was excited, thinking I was helping him step into the modern world.
But then he quietly asked,
‘If I do that, then I won’t need to step outside anymore?’
‘Exactly!’ I said proudly.
He paused for a moment before answering, and his words stayed with me.
‘Since I walked into this bank today, I’ve already met four friends. I spoke with the staff who know me by name. This place gives me conversation, warmth, and human connection.
You know I live alone now. Getting dressed and coming here gives my day meaning.
A couple of years ago when I was sick, the fruit seller I buy from came to visit me. He sat beside my bed and cried with me.
And when your mother fell during her morning walk recently, our local grocer recognized her immediately, brought her home in his car, and made sure she was safe.
Do you think all of that exists in online deliveries?
I don’t just want transactions. I want relationships. I want to know the people I deal with, not just receive packages from strangers.
Technology makes things convenient, but convenience is not the same as life.’
I had no answer.
That day I realized something important:
Technology can save time, but it cannot replace human presence, kindness, or community.
Sometimes, the real value of stepping outside isn’t the errand itself — it’s the people we meet along the way.
Spend time with people, not only with devices.”
