World's largest Hotel with 7,351 rooms!
The Colossus of Genting Highlands: Inside the World’s Largest Hotel
While the world is home to millions of hotels, only a select few achieve global fame for their dizzying heights, opulent luxury, or fascinating origins. Perched high amidst the mist-shrouded peaks of Malaysia, First World Hotel stands globally unparalleled for one extraordinary reason: its sheer scale.
Holding the crown as the world's largest hotel by room count, this colorful marvel is nestled in the popular hill resort of Genting Highlands. Boasting an astounding 7,351 operational rooms, it was officially certified by Guinness World Records on June 20, 2015, securing its place in hospitality history.
A Visionary Dream Carved into the Mountains
The story of First World Hotel began as a daring dream envisioned by the legendary Malaysian tycoon, Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong. In 1965, while working on a hydroelectric project, he conceived the idea of transforming a rugged mountain ridge into a premier resort—a sanctuary where people could escape the stifling tropical heat and chaotic hustle of city life.
At the time, Genting Highlands was nothing more than an untouched, inaccessible wilderness. Undeterred by the daunting terrain, the Genting Group undertook the monumental task of carving a highway through the mountains. By 1969, they completed a remarkable 25.5-kilometre road tracing from Genting Sempah all the way to the mountain peak, laying the literal groundwork for tourism.
The Birth of a Hospitality Mega-Structure
To cater to the rapidly growing influx of tourists escaping to the mountains, ambitious plans for the First World Hotel were set in motion. The first phase of construction commenced in the year 2000. By December of that year, the hotel opened its doors with its first 1,000 rooms.
The vision, however, extended far beyond simple lodging. The developers seamlessly integrated a massive complex featuring premium shopping malls, world-class restaurants, an indoor theme park, and state-of-the-art convention facilities. By 2001, Tower 1 and its adjoining mega-complex were fully completed, transforming the peak into a vibrant entertainment hub.
The 7,351-Room Record Breaker
The defining legacy of First World Hotel lies in its staggering room capacity. It first clinched the Guinness World Record in 2006 when it housed 6,118 rooms. But the developers did not stop there. To meet an insatiable demand, a massive expansion followed. With the grand opening of Tower 3 (known as the Tower 2 Annex), the hotel added over a thousand more keys, officially pushing its grand total to 7,351 rooms in 2015—a record that still leaves travelers in awe today.
