Horse-carriage in New York to be discontinued - soon!
After more than 160 years, one of New York City's most iconic traditions is coming to an end!
On October 22, 2026, the New York City Council voted to ban horse-drawn carriage rides, with the phaseout scheduled for June 1, 2028. The decision passed with 40 council members voting in favor and seven against.
Horse-drawn carriages have been part of New York's history since the 1850s, becoming a famous attraction for visitors exploring Central Park.
However, concerns about animal welfare and public safety have surrounded the industry for years.
The legislation also requires plans to help affected workers find alternative employment and ensure the humane retirement or relocation of carriage horses.
Some carriage operators oppose the decision and are considering legal challenges.
