I wipe asses for a living!
YES. I WIPE ASSES FOR A LIVING. AND I GIVE EVERYTHING.ππ©·
Apparently, that’s all some people think we do in elderly care.
Oh honey. π
I’m a healthcare worker and I pass medications
And yes, I wipe asses.
I also wipe tears. Noses. Chins. Floors. Occasionally my own dignity when a urine bag decides to explode. π
I brush teeth. Wash bodies. Change sheets. Clean dentures. Make porridge. Serve coffee.
But here’s what doesn’t fit into a job description.
I knock before entering because it’s THEIR home.
I cover their body because needing help doesn’t mean losing dignity.
I brush their hair because looking like yourself still matters at 90.
I hold hands when someone is frightened.
I listen to stories I’ve heard seventeen times.
And sometimes I sit beside someone whose life is ending.
Then I walk into the next room.
Because someone needs breakfast.
THAT’S ELDERLY CARE.
One minute you’re laughing. The next you’re reminded how fragile life is.
Some remember my name. Some forget it before I’ve left the room.
They ALL deserve kindness. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
And no, we’re not saints.
We’re exhausted humans with aching backs, bills to pay and bladders we apparently don’t have time to empty. π
Understaffed. Underpaid. Sometimes treated like we’re replaceable.
But our residents aren’t tasks on a checklist.
They’re someone’s mother. Father. Grandparent.
People who raised children, fell in love, danced and lived entire lives before we met them.
And one day, that could be you. Or me.
My name is Pamela. It means all sweetness.
I don’t have a halo.
I wear gloves and scrubs and a VERY questionable sense of humour. ππ©·
And I give everything.
But caring shouldn’t mean accepting endless exhaustion.
KINDNESS IS NOT A STAFFING STRATEGY.
So next time someone says we ”just wipe asses”...
Remember whose hand we might be holding when nobody else is there.
RESPECT THE PEOPLE WHO CARE FOR YOUR PEOPLE. ❤️ I LOVE MY JOB AND WHAT I DO!
