Returns for a help?
It all started on a mundane afternoon while I was elbow-deep in soap suds. Seeing me diligently scrubbing away, my next-door neighbor leaned over and smirked, "Hey, if you're that good, care to wash the dishes at my place too?"
Instinctively, I flashed my standard, well-rehearsed reply: "Of course, Bhabhi-ji! I’m highly experienced in this department."
Then came the trap. She laughed and asked, "And what will you charge me in return?"
Trying to be clever, I bypassed my usual jokes and said, "Oh, just give me a little less than what my wife gives me."
Instantly, her smile vanished. She looked horrified, turned on her heel, and stormed off. From that day on, I was completely blacklisted. She stopped talking to me, avoided eye contact, and even her polite neighborly smiles vanished. I was utterly bewildered by her sudden hostility. What did I even say?
A week later, fate intervened at the local market. Spotting her near the vegetable stalls, I realized this was my only shot at redemption. I strategically blocked her path and gently confronted her. "Bhabhi-ji, please tell me, why have you been so upset with me lately?"
She glared at me and snapped, "You know exactly why! Your behavior was highly inappropriate."
"What could I have possibly said to offend you?" I pleaded.
She went quiet, crossing her arms.
Realization finally dawned on me, and I quickly chimed in, "Bhabhi-ji, you completely misunderstood! When you asked what I’d take in return for the dishes, and I said 'a little less than what my wife gives me'... I meant money! My wife pays me ₹100 every time I do the dishes. I was just suggesting you give me a slight neighborly discount—say, ₹75!"
The silence that followed was golden. The color drained from her face, and it was her turn to look completely mortified. "Oh..." she stammered, her eyes wide with shock. "Is that what you meant? I... I thought you implied something completely different!"
I chuckled and explained, "Actually, my wife and I have a strict domestic contract. Whoever tackles the sink gets ₹100 from the other. When she washes them, I pay up. When I wash them, she pays me. It’s the only way we managed to turn a soul-crushing chore into a thrilling game!"
Blushing a deep shade of crimson, Bhabhi-ji buried her face in her hands, thoroughly embarrassed by her own wild imagination. Needless to say, the ice was thoroughly broken, and our daily chats—and smiles—came laughing back.
