Diplomat has to face SIR!

Retired diplomat Navdeep Suri, who represented India as ambassador to the UAE and Egypt and as High Commissioner to Australia, has found himself having to prove his Indian citizenship during the ongoing voter roll verification in Punjab. Suri said he submitted his voter ID and Aadhaar card to the Booth Level Officer and was initially told that everything was in order. He later received a message saying that some of his details did not match the records from 2003. Since he was posted abroad that year, he was reportedly asked to provide his passport as additional proof The former diplomat, who retired in 2019 after representing India in three countries, questioned the situation on social media, asking what happens to an ordinary citizen if someone with his background can face difficulties proving his citizenship. The issue has also raised questions about which documents are accepted as conclusive proof of citizenship. India Today noted that Aadhaar establishes identity and residence but not citizenship, while a passport, although normally issued after verification, is also not by itself considered conclusive proof of citizenship. The incident comes during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Punjab, where voters are being asked to verify their details. The episode has now sparked a wider discussion about documentation, citizenship and the difficulties ordinary citizens may face during such verification exercises.
