Fix the system to gain positive results!
The image is really about the difference between effort and effective effort.
Imagine two people carrying buckets of water up a hill.
The first person is working incredibly hard. He is sweating, climbing, pushing himself. But his bucket has a hole in it, so by the time he reaches the top, most of the water is gone.
The second person carries the same amount of water, but his bucket is repaired. He may not work harder, but his effort actually produces a result.
That is a powerful lesson about life.
We often respond to failure by increasing our effort.
Not getting the job? Apply to more jobs.
Not growing the business? Work longer hours.
Not improving financially? Make more money.
Not reaching the goal? Push harder.
But sometimes the problem isn’t that you aren’t working hard enough.
The problem is the system you’re working inside.
You can spend years trying to become more disciplined while keeping habits that sąbøțągę you. You can work twelve hours a day in the wrong direction. You can keep repeating the same strategy and call your persistence a virtue.
But persistence without reflection can become a very sophisticated form of self-sąbøțągę
The uncomfortable question isn’t always…How can I work harder?
Sometimes it’s….. What am I doing repeatedly that makes my hard work leak away?
Maybe you need better skills, not more hours.
Maybe you need a better strategy, not more motivation.
Maybe you need to change your environment, not blame your character.
Maybe you need to repair the bucket before you carry more water.
And this applies to almost everything.
A person can keep pouring effort into a broken relationship when what the relationship needs is an honest conversation.
A business can keep spending money on marketing when the real problem is a terrible product.
A student can keep studying longer when the real problem is studying without understanding.
A person can keep chasing opportunities when what they really need is to improve their positioning.
More effort cannot always compensate for a broken system.
So before you ask yourself, How much harder can I work?
Pause.
Ask a better question:
Is my effort actually reaching the place where I want the results to appear?
Because sometimes the bravest thing you can do isn’t to push harder.
It’s to stop, inspect the bucket, find the hole, and repair it.
Then carry the water.
