Refrigerator runs on Salt & water!
Three teenage students in India began working on a problem that affects hospitals far beyond their own classroom.
They wanted to find a way to keep vaccines and medicine cold in places where electricity is unreliable or unavailable.
A normal refrigerator needs power, a generator needs fuel and batteries eventually run out.
The students created a device called Thermavault, an electricity-free cooling system designed for remote clinics and communities.
The refrigerator uses the cooling effect created when certain salts dissolve in water.
That chemical process absorbs heat, causing the temperature inside the container to drop without requiring an electrical outlet or compressor.
The team designed the system to be portable, reusable and affordable for medical facilities that cannot depend on a continuous power supply.
Their project received support through The Earth Prize competition, allowing them to improve the design and move closer to real-world use.
They also planned to build hundreds of units for hospitals and health centers in underserved regions.
A vaccine may look like a small glass vial, but it must remain within a safe temperature range from the moment it is produced until the moment it is given to a patient.
If that cold chain fails, the medicine can become unusable.
