Why get married before one completes 25yrs?

In Denmark, there is a strange but playful tradition for people who are still unmarried when they turn 25. Friends and family may cover them from head to toe in cinnamon. Sometimes, the birthday person is even tied to a lamppost before the cinnamon is thrown over them. The tradition is known as “pebersvend,” meaning pepper bachelor, for men, and “pebermø,” meaning pepper maiden, for women. The custom is connected to Denmark’s old spice trade. Its roots are believed to go back to the 15th or 16th century, when traveling spice merchants often moved from place to place and were less likely to settle down and marry. However, the specific tradition of covering unmarried 25-year-olds in cinnamon did not appear until around the 1960s. It reportedly began in northern Jutland before spreading to other parts of Denmark by the 1980s. The tradition does not end at age 25. If someone reaches 30 and is still unmarried, the cinnamon is replaced with pepper. This is usually a much stronger and more uncomfortable experience because pepper can irritate the eyes and nose. Although the tradition may sound extreme, it is generally seen in Denmark as a lighthearted prank between friends and family. It is not a required ceremony, and people do not have to take part. The custom has also become less common among younger generations. Still, the unusual tradition remains a memorable part of Danish culture and continues to surprise people who hear about it for the first time. For many, it is simply a funny way for friends to celebrate an unmarried person’s birthday.
