Record speed of Data-Transmission!

Japanese researchers transmitted an astonishing amount of data through an optical fiber stretching more than 1,800 kilometers. The speed reached 1.02 petabits per second, which is more than one million gigabits moving through the system every second. The experiment was led by Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology. Instead of using a single pathway through the fiber, the researchers developed a cable containing 19 separate cores that could carry information at the same time. It was similar to creating 19 highways of light inside one fiber while keeping the cable close to the size of those already used in communication networks. The signal traveled across 1,808 kilometers, and maintaining that speed over such a long distance was one of the experiment’s greatest achievements. Data weakens as it travels, signals can interfere with one another and every additional kilometer creates another opportunity for information to become distorted. The team used advanced amplifiers and transmission technology to keep the signals moving clearly across the entire route. Future networks will need to carry far more information than today’s internet as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, streaming, scientific research and connected devices continue expanding. The record was not created simply to help one person download a movie more quickly. It was created for a future in which the world will produce more information than current communication networks were ever designed to handle
