Re-generate Tooth-enamel!
Tooth enamel cannot regenerate. Every dentist will tell you that. Once it wears away or decays, the body has no mechanism to replace it - only synthetic materials can fill the gap, and none of them are the real thing.
A team at the University of Nottingham has built a gel that changes that.
It works by mimicking the proteins the body uses to build enamel during infancy - proteins that normally switch off and never reactivate. Applied to a damaged tooth, the gel forms a microscopic scaffold inside cracks and pores, then attracts calcium and phosphate ions directly from saliva to grow a new mineral layer from within.
The resulting tissue isn't a coating. It isn't a patch. Through a process called epitaxial mineralization, the new enamel integrates directly into the existing tooth structure - matching its original architecture at a crystalline level and replicating its physical strength.
In testing it survived brushing, chewing forces, and acidic food exposure, performing identically to natural enamel. No fluoride. No drilling. No waste.
The researchers have co-founded a startup, Mintech-Bio, targeting clinical market entry as early as next year.
Tooth decay affects 3.5 billion people worldwide. The current standard of care - drill, fill, repeat - replaces destroyed tissue with synthetic material that degrades, fails, and eventually needs replacing again. This gel replaces destroyed tissue with tissue that is biologically indistinguishable from what was lost.
The hardest substance the human body makes. Now the human body can make it again.
