Have you ever protested a school rule you thought was unfair? In June 2017, as the UK sweltered through its hottest days since 1976, boys at Isca Academy in Exeter had a simple request: can we wear shorts? The school said no, citing its strict uniform policy. When students pushed back, pointing out that girls were allowed to have bare legs, the headteacher reportedly made a sarcastic remark: they could wear a skirt if they liked. The students took her seriously. The next day, five boys showed up in skirts. The protest quickly snowballed. By Thursday, over 30 boys had joined the "box-pleat rebellion," borrowing skirts from sisters and girlfriends—and some even shaved their legs to avoid any complaints. The global media picked up the story. A spokesperson for Devon County Council confirmed none of the boys were penalized. They had found a legal loophole that couldn't be punished. By the end of the week, the school announced that shorts would be introduced as part of the uniform for the following year. The boys had won.
